DangerShrooms

P2230583

After a couple of paintings on edible mushrooms, I made a series for poisonous ones. They’re really interesting, I wish I had more time to study and explore them, but it was a busy week at work. Looks like poisonous mushrooms have more interesting, vibrant colors than edible ones. ^_^

More Shrooms…

I enjoyed my first mushroom paintings so I thought I’d make a second set the next day. Still fun! Who knew there were so many varieties of edible mushrooms. I feel so deprived. I saw a video yesterday of really odd-looking shrooms, I should try those next.

I wish I can see these in person. Especially the green one. It looks like the 1Up mushroom in the game Mario Bros.

‘Shrooms

P2140555

I was sick with cough and colds last week, so I wasn’t really able to sit up too long and paint anything. I’m feeling much better today, though. I thought I’d have a little fun. I had the idea while having dinner with my husband and a friend last Sunday. We had some awesome mushroom chicharon (deep fried mushrooms that taste like pork cracklings)  for appetizers and oh mah goodness. Those things are delicious! If I were blindfolded, I wouldn’t have guessed those were oyster mushrooms. I thought the little folds and textures were interesting.

On this page, I drew/painted oyster mushrooms (yum), morel and chanterelle mushrooms.

On this page, shiitake, enoki and porcini. It was lots of fun! I had a great time exploring different kinds of browns, yellows, and reds.

Family Dinner

IMG_5076-2

A few days ago my husband and I joined his side of the family for dinner. We had family from the US on vacation, and it was a dinner to celebrate birthdays and the despedida. Traffic going to Megamall was abysmal. I haven’t been to that part of Manila in a while, so I was completely floored to see how EDSA was just a carpet of red tail lights slowly inching forward. It was horrible, and I was so relieved we got to Megamall around 7:45 PM. Dad’s was full, which was a little surprising given it’s a Tuesday night. It wasn’t so bad, though, the food was good and the service was polite and punctual. Dinner with family was also good, it’s nice to see the cousins complete and just enjoying each other’s company.

We stayed until closing time, and it was pretty sad to see the cousins lingering around each other because goodbyes suck. 🙁 Despedidas are bittersweet that way. Eating soothes the difficulty of parting, sending family members off with best wishes and happy memories.

Here’s looking forward to the next family gatherings.

Yesterday’s Theme: Frozen Treats

This year opened up with a lot of challenges at work, so I really hardly had any time to draw, paint, or write. I did find a bit of free time yesterday, though, to participate in Doodlewash’s theme which is Frozen Treats. January’s themes are all about childhood memories, and the first thing that came to mind when I thought about my favorite childhood frozen treats was Funwich. Ah, yes, I still have a Funwich-shaped hole in my heart because it’s not in production anymore.

I remember when I was young, Funwich was a bit more expensive than other frozen treats, but it was really worth it. My brother and I would save up our lunch money and head off to this little store just a few meters from our house called Mini Mart to buy these sweet treats.

He liked the chocolate flavored Funwich, I liked the vanilla ones. Perhaps it’s because I’m remembering The Funwich through the eyes of my younger self, and good childhood memories are always awesome, but I think this is still the best ice cream sandwich I ever tried.

There are a lot of food memories tied to my childhood. We lived in an open community and, unlike gated communities, there’s an overabundance of street vendors, sari-sari stores, carinderias, and other places to buy food. From binatog to betamax, I tried them all haha. Oh, the wonderful memories of childhood, when things were simple and you didn’t really think too much about how clean the kapitbahay’s ice candy is, you just buy it especially if there’s mangga flavor. ^_^
