This used to go “hisssss…”

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I got this 5-pen python leather case from a member of the Fountain Pen Network Philippines. I’ve been after this case since I saw another member post this in lambskin (which used to go “baaaaaa…”) several months back. I was told it was only sold by the manufacturer to a specific vendor in Rustan’s. So I combed several Rustan’s outlets for this, but I wasn’t able to find any in my area. So when this went up for sale, my hand went up too. Haha.

I like the design of this pen case because I don’t need to bother with zippers. It lets me access my pens easier, and it lays flat on the table. I took a lot of time picking the color for this case. I was waffling between this brown one or the grey and black one, which looks undoubtedly like the snake skin that it is. I don’t own leather things except for leather journals and pen cases, so I wasn’t very sure I’d like the exotic leather to look so close to how it looked like while it was still…you, know, alive and stuff.

I’m glad I picked the dark brown one, though. It looks very simple and doesn’t draw too much attention. The workmanship of this case is just amazing. The stitches are clean and sturdy, the cuts along the edges are also very meticulously done. This is definitely a well-made product that does not take away from the organic feel of the case. It doesn’t have that antiseptic, soulless feel to it.

The pen came with a pretty cool bag, and a tag that explains the product best: “The leather used for this handmade product is naturally dyed and treated. As such, you can see the individual grain pattern and markings of the skin that makes each one unique. They come from the pelts of farmed animals that often exhibit a record of their natural life cycle such as tick bites, scratches and cuts which lend character to each finished product. The finest leather craftsmen make each one by hand that results in no two products being identical, after which – lotion specifically formulated for exotic leathers is applied by hand to clean, moisturize and protect the leather. We’re proud of each item we produce and are confident you’ll enjoy them for many years.”

They’re definitely right to be proud of the product. It’s really beautiful. Who knew python skin can be so soft and supple?

The texture is incredible. It’s very different from my lambskin pen case (which I also love, and is made by this same manufacturer) in that its textures are amazing. This definitely looks like it will age well with proper care. From the feedback I got from people who used pen cases and wraps from this manufacturer, the cases don’t cause stains. Note that improperly cured leather can cause unsightly tarnishing on the metal and gold parts of your pens.

I like that the pen slots are also generous without being too roomy. My biggest pen is the Sheaffer Lifetime Senior, which is bigger in girth than the Bexley Corona. It’s a comfortable fit.

I think it’s a wonderful pen case. I bought directly from the reseller, but I think this is also available in Rustans’ outlets. I’m trying to find out where and will update my post as soon as I get the information.

6-Pen Bespoke Leather Pen Case from Pengrafik

I’m a little finicky with cases. When I started collecting fountain pens, I enjoyed different kinds of pen wraps though I was always on the lookout for good leather cases. The thing is, it’s hard to find leather pen cases that were made with fine writing instruments in mind. More than being beautiful, I like pen cases that actually keep pens safe from being jostled around in my bag and scratching each other up. It’s even harder to find leather cases with dividers in bookstores or department stores.

So when I saw this leather pen case at one of the South pen meets of FPN-P, I ordered one for myself right away.

It’s a bespoke 6-pen leather case from Pengrafik. It’s made of genuine lambskin leather and it’s gorgeous. You can pick out the leather you want from several swatches. I gotta hand it to Kailash from Pengrafik. I just told him I wanted a “brown leather case” and he picked this color of brown for me–a luscious caramel color, which I think it’s an excellent choice. I love that the suede lining is dark brown, just gorgeous.

It is very soft, smells good, and the stitching looks clean. The workmanship on the case is pretty good.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt has two elastic bands to keep the pens securely in place. Some cases only have one band…bad idea. The interior is made of synthetic suede, and it’s  soft enough not to be abrasive to the pens. From what I gathered, it does not cause discoloration on the pens’ metal parts. That’s one of the issues of other leather cases. Perhaps the salt used in curing the leather reacts to the metal and introduces discoloration. After checking around a bit, I know this case won’t do that to my pens.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThe divider is real suede. It prevents the pens from the two sides of the case from rubbing against each other when the case is zipped close. It fits my longest and fattest pens (TWSBI Micarta and Bexley Corona) without being bulky.

Overall, I love this pen case. I love the leather on it, the texture is superb. The zipper doesn’t feel cheap. The size and thickness makes it convenient to carry around.

It’s even cat-approved.

All it needs is a little Jack Skellington, and it’s perfect!

I bought this case from Pengrafik.com. They also have a Facebook page.

Bespoke Leather Pen Case from Alunsina

Last year I asked Alunsina Handbound Books to make me a leather pen case. I didn’t want anything too flashy, I just wanted a safe way to carry my pens around and pull them out faster. I wanted to try an alternative to my usual pen wrap. I sent them an example of the case that I prefer and then just waited for them to finish. I realize that I placed my order at a bad time because the end of the year is a very busy time for them. So, a few days ago they sent me what I ordered for.

I liked it a lot, though the pen slots were initially a tight fit for most my pens. Then I realized that I needed to stretch the leather slots a bit by actually pushing a Sharpie through them. That seemed to do the trick, though it still doesn’t fit my bigger pens like the Bexley and the Micarta. The others have no problem fitting.

It has a space to fit in one jotter notebook, but I realized that since the outer leather is thick and holds its shape, I can use the space for the notebook as an extra space for my other pens. It can fit 7 pens (4 in the slots and 3 in the grooves between them). Actually, you can fit in 9 if you use the leftmost and rightmost grooves too. I used those grooves for my Parker 51 pencil and my Parker 45 Harlequin ballpoint pen. The thick leather holds its shape and holds all the pens in place.

The size of the whole case is about an in or so longer than Kislap, but it’s small enough to fit comfortably in my bag.

Review: Elias Journals and Pen Case

elias

For people who love to write, finding decent notebooks is a must. One of my friends (Keshia) recommended Elias notebooks to me, and of course I had to try it out. I must say I am happy I did! this happy bundle was delivered by Xend to our house this afternoon.

elias-8

My first impression on the journal is that it looks very presentable. The leather cover is very pleasant to touch. It’s genuine leather and it’s very soft and supple. Almost like velvet. Smells awesome too! I’m not ashamed to say that I’m a notebook huffer, and this notebook is very huff-worthy. The smell of leather and paper is ohhhh sooooo gooood. The leather cover is thick and the bindings looks very secured. I bought a large and small journal, the one in the photo above is 5.4 x 8 inches with 88 sheets of unlined paper.

elias-9

Yes, it actually is as soft as it looks. The notebook initially has some difficulties laying down flat, but it looks like something that will come naturally as you open it more often.

Update: While the journals don’t lay flat, it opens up quite easily as you use it more often. I myself have softened the spine by fully opening the notebook. In other words, binuksan ko ng maiging-maigi. Don’t be afraid, the spine can take it.

elias-10

There’s a little pocket at the back where you can store notes and whatnots, and it had two slips of paper inside. These are neatly printed sheets; one explains how to take care of the leather, the other explains the origins of the notebook’s name. Elias is from the character in Jose Rizal’s novels Noli Me Tangere. I think that providing a glimpse of the notebook’s backstory is a very nice touch.

Now, on to the paper.  Continue reading “Review: Elias Journals and Pen Case”

Pen Trays from GoPens

One of the members of FPN-P organized a group buy for GoPens‘ pen trays. I got two burgundy trays. I finally got the trays from my brother’s place today and I couldn’t be happier.

As I grow my collection, I’ll probably want other boxes in the future. Something tells me though that my first pen box will always be special. 🙂 The pen trays make it look more organized and prevent the pens from scratching each other. Looks really pretty. I love it.

I placed the leftover part fro the tray inside a box so that it will hold my pens securely while I’m cleaning or tinkering with them.
